Mulch & Rock Installation in South Jersey
Bulk mulch and decorative rock delivered and installed. Suppress weeds, retain moisture, and give your landscape beds a clean, finished look.
Why Mulch Matters for Your Landscape
Mulch is one of the simplest and most effective things you can do for your landscape. A proper layer of mulch suppresses weeds, retains soil moisture during South Jersey's hot summers, regulates root temperature through freeze-thaw cycles, and adds organic matter to the soil as it breaks down over time.
Beyond the practical benefits, fresh mulch transforms the appearance of your entire property. Clean, uniform mulch in every bed makes the plantings pop, the edges look sharp, and the whole landscape feel cared for. Most South Jersey homeowners refresh mulch once a year in spring, and the difference is immediate.
Miller's Landscaping delivers and installs mulch and decorative rock across Gloucester, Salem, Camden, Atlantic, Cape May, and Cumberland counties. We buy in bulk for better pricing and handle everything: old mulch removal if needed, bed edging, weed barrier installation, and final spreading to the correct depth.
- Suppresses weeds and reduces maintenance
- Retains soil moisture by up to 70%
- Insulates roots against temperature extremes
- Adds organic matter as it decomposes
- Instant curb appeal improvement
Mulch Types We Install
We carry every common mulch type and can source specialty products on request. Here are the most popular choices for South Jersey properties.
Hardwood Mulch
The most popular and cost-effective mulch for South Jersey landscapes. Hardwood mulch is made from shredded deciduous trees and decomposes at a moderate rate, feeding the soil over 1 to 2 years. It stays in place well, even on slopes, and develops a rich dark brown color as it ages. Available in natural brown, black-dyed, and red-dyed varieties.
- Most affordable option per yard
- Natural brown, black, or red dyed
- Stays in place on slopes
- Best all-purpose choice
Cedar Mulch
Cedar mulch has natural insect-repellent properties due to the oils in the wood. It resists decay longer than hardwood, typically lasting 2 to 3 years before needing replacement. Cedar mulch has a lighter golden-brown color and a pleasant natural scent. It is a good choice for beds near the house where you want to discourage ants, termites, and other insects.
- Natural insect-repellent oils
- Longer lasting (2-3 years)
- Pleasant natural cedar scent
- Ideal near foundations
Rubber Mulch
Made from recycled tires, rubber mulch does not decompose, does not float away in heavy rain, and does not attract insects. It is the most durable option and is especially popular for playgrounds and commercial properties where long-term maintenance cost matters more than organic soil benefits. Available in multiple colors.
- Does not decompose or fade
- Stays in place during heavy rain
- Best for playgrounds and high-traffic areas
- Higher upfront cost, lowest long-term cost
Dyed Mulch (Black & Brown)
Dyed mulch uses a carbon-based or iron oxide-based colorant applied to shredded hardwood. The color lasts significantly longer than natural mulch, typically retaining its appearance for a full growing season. Black mulch creates a modern, high-contrast look that makes green plantings stand out. Brown mulch gives a rich, natural appearance.
- Color lasts a full season
- Black for modern contrast, brown for natural look
- Safe, non-toxic colorants
- Most popular choice for curb appeal
Rock & Stone Options
Decorative rock is a permanent ground cover that never needs replacing. It is ideal for dry creek beds, drainage areas, walkways, and beds where you want a low-maintenance, modern look.
River Rock
Smooth, rounded stones in earth tones. River rock is the most popular decorative stone for South Jersey landscapes. Use it for dry creek beds, drainage swales, around water features, and as accent in garden beds. Available in sizes from 1 inch to 6 inches.
- Smooth, natural appearance
- Excellent for drainage areas
- Multiple size options
Pea Gravel
Small, rounded stones (3/8 inch) in a mix of tan, brown, and gray. Pea gravel is affordable and versatile, commonly used for walkways, patio borders, ground cover in seating areas, and as a base layer under pavers. It drains quickly and compacts slightly for a stable surface.
- Affordable and versatile
- Great for walkways and patios
- Excellent drainage
Crushed Stone
Angular fragments of granite, limestone, or trap rock. Crushed stone compacts tightly, making it ideal for driveways, utility paths, drainage trenches, and as a base material. Available in multiple sizes from quarter-inch screenings to 2-inch pieces.
- Compacts for a stable surface
- Best for driveways and paths
- Structural and decorative uses

Choosing Between Mulch and Rock
Both mulch and rock serve as effective ground cover, but they work best in different situations. The right choice depends on your goals, budget, and how much maintenance you want to do.
Choose mulch if you want to improve soil health, need an affordable annual refresh that keeps beds looking fresh, or have acid-loving plants like azaleas and rhododendrons that benefit from organic matter decomposition.
Choose rock if you want a permanent solution that never needs replacing, have drainage concerns that require stone, prefer a modern or xeriscape aesthetic, or want to reduce long-term maintenance costs.
Many of our clients use a combination: mulch in planting beds where soil health matters, and rock in drainage areas, dry creek beds, and accent features. We can help you decide what works best for each area of your property during your free estimate.
"Miller's installed 15 yards of black mulch in all our beds. The crew was fast, neat, and the edges look razor sharp. Huge difference in our curb appeal. We will be calling them every spring for a refresh."
"We had them do a river rock dry creek bed to solve a drainage problem in our backyard. It looks beautiful and actually works. No more standing water after rain. Functional and decorative. Great work."
Mulch & Rock Installation FAQ
Bulk mulch in South Jersey typically costs between $30 and $55 per cubic yard for material, depending on the type. Hardwood mulch is the most affordable, while cedar and colored mulch cost more. Installation labor adds roughly $30 to $50 per yard for spreading, bed edging, and cleanup. A typical residential property needs 5 to 15 cubic yards. We provide a complete quote covering material, delivery, and installation before starting. Call (856) 832-7958 for a free estimate.
For most South Jersey residential landscapes, dyed hardwood mulch (black or brown) offers the best combination of appearance, performance, and value. The color holds well through the growing season, it suppresses weeds effectively, and it decomposes at a rate that benefits soil health without disappearing too quickly. Cedar mulch is a premium choice near foundations because of its natural insect-repelling properties. For areas where you want permanent coverage without annual replacement, decorative rock is the better option.
The ideal mulch depth is 2 to 3 inches. Less than 2 inches will not suppress weeds effectively. More than 4 inches can suffocate plant roots, trap excess moisture, and create a habitat for rodents. When refreshing existing mulch, add only enough to bring the total depth back to 2-3 inches. If your beds have accumulated excessive mulch from years of topping off, we recommend removing the old material before adding new. Always keep mulch pulled back 2-3 inches from tree trunks and plant stems to prevent rot.
