Why Choose Sod Over Seed?

Sod gives you a fully established lawn in a single day. There is no waiting 3 to 4 weeks for germination, no bare soil washing away in the next rainstorm, and no patchy results from uneven seed distribution. For homeowners who want immediate curb appeal or need to stabilize slopes and prevent erosion, sod installation is the fastest path to a thick, healthy lawn.

Miller's Landscaping installs sod across Gloucester, Salem, Camden, Atlantic, Cape May, and Cumberland counties. We source fresh-cut sod from regional farms that grow turf varieties bred for New Jersey's Zone 7a climate, so your new lawn is adapted to local soil conditions, humidity, and temperature swings from day one.

  • Usable lawn within 2 to 3 weeks
  • Immediate erosion control on slopes
  • No weed competition during establishment
  • Year-round installation (spring through fall is optimal)
  • Full prep work included: grading, soil amendment, rolling

Best Sod Types for New Jersey Lawns

We select the right grass variety for your property based on sun exposure, soil type, traffic level, and your maintenance preferences.

Tall Fescue

The most popular choice for South Jersey lawns. Tall fescue is a cool-season grass with deep roots that handle heat, drought, and heavy foot traffic better than most alternatives. It stays green through mild winters and tolerates partial shade. Ideal for most residential properties in our area.

  • Drought-tolerant once established
  • Handles sun and partial shade
  • Low to moderate maintenance
  • Best for most NJ residential lawns

Kentucky Bluegrass

Kentucky bluegrass produces a dense, fine-textured lawn with a deep blue-green color that many homeowners prefer. It spreads by rhizomes, so it self-repairs minor damage over time. It does require more water and sunlight than fescue, making it best suited for full-sun properties with irrigation.

  • Self-repairing through rhizome growth
  • Premium appearance and color
  • Needs full sun (6+ hours)
  • Best with an irrigation system

Bermuda Grass

Bermuda is a warm-season grass that thrives in South Jersey's hot summers and is extremely wear-resistant. It is the top choice for sports fields, high-traffic areas, and properties in the warmer southern portions of our service area near Atlantic and Cape May counties. It goes dormant in winter.

  • Excellent heat and drought tolerance
  • Extremely wear-resistant
  • Goes dormant (brown) in winter
  • Best for full-sun, high-traffic areas

How We Install Sod

Proper preparation is what separates a sod job that roots quickly from one that fails. Here is our step-by-step installation process.

Site Assessment

We measure the area, evaluate soil conditions, check drainage patterns, and recommend the best sod variety for your property.

Soil Preparation

Remove old turf or debris. Grade the surface for proper drainage. Till the soil 4 to 6 inches deep. Amend with topsoil or compost if needed.

Sod Installation

Lay fresh-cut sod in a staggered brick pattern for seamless coverage. Cut precisely around beds, walkways, and hardscape edges.

Rolling & Watering

Roll the entire lawn to press sod firmly against soil for root-to-soil contact. Deep water immediately. Provide a written aftercare guide.

Sod vs. Seed: Which Is Right for You?

Factor Sod Installation Seeding
Time to Usable Lawn 2 to 3 weeks 8 to 12 weeks
Erosion Control Immediate None until germination
Weed Competition Minimal (mature turf blocks weeds) High (bare soil invites weeds)
Best Season Spring through fall Fall only (for best results)
Upfront Cost Higher Lower
Success Rate 95%+ with proper watering Variable (weather-dependent)
Slope Stability Excellent (holds immediately) Poor (seed washes away)

For most South Jersey homeowners, sod is the better investment when you factor in the time savings, higher success rate, and the reduced need for weed treatments during establishment. Seeding can make sense for very large properties or areas where budget is the primary concern. We also offer aeration and overseeding for existing lawns that just need thickening.

Best Time to Install Sod in New Jersey

The ideal windows for sod installation in South Jersey are spring (April through June) and fall (September through mid-November). During these periods, cooler temperatures reduce stress on the sod while the soil is warm enough for rapid root development.

Summer installation is possible but requires more aggressive watering to prevent the sod from drying out before roots establish. We generally recommend scheduling summer sod jobs only if an irrigation system is in place.

Winter installation is not recommended. While sod will not die if laid in winter, it will not root until spring, and the risk of desiccation and frost heave increases significantly.

Aftercare: The First 2 Weeks

  • Water 2 to 3 times daily for the first 7 days
  • Reduce to once daily in week 2
  • Do not mow until sod resists a gentle tug
  • Stay off the lawn as much as possible
  • First mow at the tallest setting on your mower

"We had our entire backyard sodded by Miller's after a pool installation tore up the old lawn. They graded everything properly, laid beautiful fescue sod, and it rooted within two weeks. Night and day difference from the mess we started with."

Sod Installation FAQ

Sod installation in South Jersey typically costs between $1.50 and $3.00 per square foot installed, depending on the sod variety, site conditions, and the amount of prep work required. A typical 2,000-square-foot lawn runs $3,000 to $6,000 including removal of old turf, grading, soil amendment, sod material, and labor. Tall fescue is the best all-around sod for most South Jersey properties. It handles our hot summers, cold winters, and heavy clay soils better than most grasses. It also tolerates partial shade, which is common in established neighborhoods. Kentucky bluegrass is a good choice for full-sun properties where you want a premium, fine-textured look. We assess your specific conditions and recommend the variety that will perform best long-term.

Spring (April through June) and fall (September through mid-November) are the best times to install sod in New Jersey. These windows provide moderate temperatures and adequate rainfall for root establishment. Summer installation works but requires significantly more watering. We do not recommend winter installation because dormant sod does not root and is vulnerable to frost heave.

With proper watering, sod typically begins rooting within 10 to 14 days. You can test this by gently tugging on a corner of the sod. If it resists, the roots have taken hold. Full root establishment, where the sod is firmly anchored and can handle normal foot traffic, takes about 4 to 6 weeks. During this period, consistent watering is critical. We provide detailed aftercare instructions with every installation.
