Keep Your Lawn Healthy All Year Long

A well-maintained landscape does more than look good. It protects your property value, prevents costly repairs, and gives your family an outdoor space to enjoy in every season. In South Jersey's Zone 7a climate, lawns face specific challenges: humid summers that breed fungal disease, freeze-thaw cycles in winter, and heavy clay soils that compact easily.

Miller's Landscaping has maintained residential and commercial properties across Gloucester, Salem, Camden, Atlantic, Cape May, and Cumberland counties for over 7 years. Our maintenance programs are built around the needs of New Jersey soil and turf, not generic advice from a textbook.

Whether you need weekly mowing, a complete fertilization program, or seasonal cleanup, we handle every detail so you can spend your time enjoying your yard rather than working in it.

  • Consistent weekly mowing on a set schedule
  • Custom fertilization and weed control programs
  • Aeration and overseeding to thicken thin lawns
  • Seasonal cleanups in spring and fall
  • Serving 6 South Jersey counties

Weekly Lawn Mowing

Consistent mowing is the single most important factor in a healthy, attractive lawn. Cutting at the right height and frequency prevents stress, discourages weeds, and promotes dense root growth that crowds out bare patches.

Our mowing crews follow best practices for cool-season grasses common across South Jersey. We adjust cutting height based on the season: taller in summer to shade roots and retain moisture, shorter in spring and fall to encourage new growth. Every visit includes edging along driveways, sidewalks, and garden beds, plus blowing of all hardscape surfaces.

  • Weekly mowing on a consistent day and time
  • Seasonal height adjustments for turf health
  • Edging along all hard surfaces and beds
  • Blowing walkways, driveways, and patios clean
  • Blade sharpening to prevent tearing and browning

Our 7-Step Fertilization Program

A custom-blended fertilization and weed control program designed specifically for New Jersey lawns. Each application is timed to match natural growth cycles in our Zone 7a climate.

Early Spring

Pre-emergent crabgrass preventer plus slow-release fertilizer to jumpstart spring green-up without burning.

Late Spring

Broadleaf weed control targeting dandelions, clover, and plantain. Balanced fertilizer for steady growth.

Early Summer

Second crabgrass preventer with surface-feeding insect control. Iron supplement for deep green color.

Mid-Summer

Spot-treat any breakthrough weeds. Light fertilizer application to sustain growth through heat stress.

Early Fall

Heavy fertilizer application during peak root growth. Broadleaf weed control for fall-germinating weeds.

Late Fall

Winterizer fertilizer high in potassium to harden turf for winter. Final broadleaf treatment.

Lime Application

pH correction based on soil test results. New Jersey soil tends acidic; lime restores balance for nutrient uptake.

Grub Control

Preventive grub application in early summer. Grubs are the number one insect pest in South Jersey lawns.

Aeration & Overseeding

Soil compaction is one of the biggest problems for New Jersey lawns, especially in developments built on heavy clay fill. Compacted soil restricts root growth, reduces water absorption, and creates thin, patchy turf that weeds easily invade.

Core aeration pulls small plugs from the soil, opening channels for air, water, and nutrients to reach the root zone. When paired with overseeding, aeration gives new grass seed direct soil contact for higher germination rates. The result is a thicker, more resilient lawn that naturally resists weeds, disease, and drought.

When to Aerate in New Jersey

The best time for aeration and overseeding in our area is late August through mid-October. Soil temperatures are still warm enough for germination, but air temperatures are cooling, which reduces competition from crabgrass and other summer weeds. We use NTEP-rated tall fescue and Kentucky bluegrass blends selected for the mid-Atlantic region.

  • Core aeration to relieve soil compaction
  • Premium seed blends rated for Zone 7a
  • Starter fertilizer included with every overseeding
  • Available spring and fall

Top-Dressing

Top-dressing adds a thin layer of compost, sand, or soil blend over an existing lawn to improve the soil structure beneath the turf. Over time, top-dressing builds organic matter in the root zone, improves drainage in clay soils, and creates a smoother, more level surface.

We typically recommend top-dressing in combination with aeration and overseeding for the best results. The compost fills aeration holes and creates an ideal seedbed while feeding the existing turf. For lawns on South Jersey's heavy clay or sandy coastal soils, top-dressing is one of the most effective long-term soil improvement methods available.

  • Screened compost blend for maximum benefit
  • Improves water retention in sandy soils
  • Improves drainage in clay soils
  • Levels out minor bumps and depressions
  • Best results when paired with aeration

Leaf Cleanup & Seasonal Maintenance

South Jersey's heavy tree canopy means serious leaf volume every fall. Left on the lawn, even a thin layer of leaves can smother grass, trap moisture, and promote snow mold and fungal disease heading into winter.

Our fall cleanup crews remove leaves from lawns, beds, and hardscape areas. We haul everything away rather than blowing debris onto your neighbor's property. In spring, we clear winter debris, cut back ornamental grasses and perennials, edge all beds, and apply a fresh layer of mulch to prepare your landscape for the growing season.

What Our Seasonal Cleanup Includes

  • Complete leaf removal from lawn, beds, and hardscape
  • Debris hauling (not just blowing to the curb)
  • Spring bed edging and perennial cutback
  • Gutter cleaning available as an add-on
  • Final fall mow at short height for winter

Landscape Maintenance FAQ

Weekly lawn mowing in South Jersey typically ranges from $35 to $75 per visit for a standard residential property, depending on lot size and complexity. Full-service maintenance plans that include fertilization, weed control, and seasonal cleanups generally run between $150 and $350 per month when spread across the active season. We provide free estimates based on your specific property, so you will know the exact price before any work begins. Call us at (856) 832-7958 for a quote.

The best time to aerate cool-season lawns in New Jersey is late August through mid-October. Soil is warm enough for seed germination if you overseed at the same time, and cooler air temperatures reduce stress on the turf. Spring aeration (April) is possible but less ideal because it opens the soil to crabgrass invasion. We generally recommend fall aeration for the best long-term results.

For cool-season grasses in South Jersey, we recommend 5 to 7 fertilizer applications per year, spaced roughly 4 to 6 weeks apart from early spring through late fall. The most important applications are the fall feedings (September and October) when your lawn is building the root reserves it needs to survive winter and green up quickly the following spring. Our 7-step program handles the timing and product selection so you never have to guess.

The ideal time to apply fresh mulch in New Jersey is mid-April through May, after the soil has warmed but before summer heat sets in. Applying too early can trap cold, wet soil and delay plant growth. A 2 to 3 inch layer of hardwood mulch suppresses weeds, retains moisture, and gives beds a clean, finished look. We offer mulch installation as a standalone service or as part of our Complete Care maintenance plan.
