Stop Wasting Time with the Garden Hose

South Jersey summers bring stretches of 90-degree heat that can brown out an unwatered lawn in a matter of days. Hand-watering or dragging a portable sprinkler around the yard is time-consuming, inconsistent, and often wastes more water than it delivers to the root zone.

A properly designed irrigation system delivers the right amount of water to every part of your property on an automated schedule. Each zone is calibrated for the specific needs of the area it covers: lawn zones get deeper, less frequent soaking; garden beds get targeted drip irrigation; and shaded areas get less water than full-sun zones.

Miller's Landscaping designs and installs sprinkler systems across Gloucester, Salem, Camden, Atlantic, Cape May, and Cumberland counties. We handle everything from the initial design and permit coordination through installation, programming, and ongoing seasonal service.

  • Custom zone design based on your property layout
  • Wi-Fi smart controllers with weather-based adjustments
  • Drip irrigation for beds, trees, and container gardens
  • Winterization and spring startup service available
  • Water savings of 30-50% compared to hand watering

Types of Sprinkler Heads We Install

Different areas of your property need different watering methods. We design each zone with the right type of head for optimal coverage and efficiency.

Rotor Heads

Rotor heads deliver a single rotating stream of water over a long distance, typically 25 to 50 feet. They are the standard choice for large open lawn areas where wide, even coverage is needed. Rotors apply water slowly, which reduces runoff on slopes and clay soil, and they handle wind better than spray heads.

  • Best for large lawn areas
  • 25-50 foot throw radius
  • Low precipitation rate reduces runoff

Spray Heads

Spray heads pop up and emit a fixed fan-shaped pattern, covering a radius of 4 to 15 feet. They are ideal for smaller lawn sections, narrow strips between sidewalks and driveways, and irregularly shaped areas where rotors cannot provide uniform coverage. Spray heads deliver water quickly, so run times are shorter.

  • Best for small and narrow areas
  • 4-15 foot throw radius
  • Fixed pattern for precise coverage

Drip Irrigation

Drip lines deliver water directly to the root zone of plants through low-flow emitters, eliminating waste from evaporation and overspray. We use drip irrigation in landscape beds, around trees and shrubs, in container gardens, and along foundation plantings. Drip zones use 60-70% less water than overhead spray.

  • Best for beds, trees, and shrubs
  • Delivers water directly to roots
  • 60-70% more efficient than spray

How We Design Your Sprinkler System

Every system starts with a site-specific design. We do not use cookie-cutter layouts because no two properties have the same combination of sun, shade, soil, and plant material.

Property Survey

We measure the property, map existing features, test water pressure and flow rate, and identify sun/shade zones.

System Design

Custom zone layout with head-to-head coverage. We select the right head types, pipe sizing, and controller for your property.

Installation

Trenching, pipe laying, head installation, backflow preventer, and controller mounting. Most residential systems install in 1-2 days.

Programming & Walkthrough

We program your controller, run every zone for verification, adjust heads for coverage, and walk you through the system.

Smart Controllers & Water Savings

Modern Wi-Fi-enabled controllers connect to local weather data and automatically adjust watering schedules based on rainfall, temperature, humidity, and wind. If rain is in the forecast, the system skips the next cycle. During a heat wave, it extends run times. You can monitor and adjust everything from your phone.

Smart controllers are not just convenient; they save real money. Homeowners typically see a 30 to 50 percent reduction in water usage compared to running a traditional timer-based system. In areas of South Jersey that experience periodic water restrictions during drought conditions, a smart controller with a rain sensor helps you stay compliant while still keeping your lawn alive.

NJ Water Restriction Compliance

New Jersey's voluntary and mandatory water conservation measures vary by municipality and water utility. Smart controllers with rain sensors and weather-based scheduling make it easy to comply with odd/even watering days and time-of-day restrictions. We configure your system to meet local requirements at installation and can reprogram if restrictions change.

Understanding Irrigation Zones

An irrigation zone is a group of sprinkler heads that run on the same valve at the same time. Proper zone planning is critical because different parts of your property have different water needs. Mixing sun and shade areas on the same zone means one area is always getting too much or too little water.

We separate zones by sun exposure, plant type, soil drainage, and slope. A typical South Jersey residential system has 4 to 8 zones, depending on property size and complexity. Larger properties or those with extensive garden beds may need more.

How Many Zones Does Your Property Need?

  • Small yard (under 3,000 sq ft): 3-4 zones
  • Average yard (3,000-6,000 sq ft): 4-6 zones
  • Large yard (6,000-10,000 sq ft): 6-8 zones
  • Estate or commercial: 8-12+ zones
  • Add 1-2 zones for drip irrigation in beds

Winterization & Spring Startup

Freezing temperatures can destroy unprotected irrigation lines and backflow preventers. Our seasonal service protects your investment.

Fall Winterization

Before the first hard freeze (typically late October to mid-November in South Jersey), we blow compressed air through every zone to purge all water from the pipes, heads, and backflow preventer. We then shut down the controller and insulate exposed components.

  • Compressed air blowout of all zones
  • Backflow preventer drain and insulation
  • Controller shutdown and programming preservation
  • Prevents cracked pipes and damaged heads

Spring Startup

In late March or early April, we reactivate your system. We slowly pressurize each zone, inspect every head for proper operation, adjust spray patterns disturbed by winter frost heave, reprogram your controller for spring watering schedules, and check for any leaks.

  • Gradual pressurization to prevent water hammer
  • Head-by-head inspection and adjustment
  • Controller reprogramming for spring schedule
  • Leak check on all zones and connections

"Best decision we made for our property. We used to spend hours a week dragging hoses around and the lawn still had dry spots. Now it waters itself perfectly. Jake's team was professional and got it done in a day and a half."

Sprinkler Installation FAQ

A residential sprinkler system in South Jersey typically costs between $3,000 and $7,000 for a standard quarter-acre lot. Larger properties, those with extensive garden beds requiring drip zones, or properties with challenging terrain can run higher. The total depends on the number of zones, head types, controller selection, and the complexity of trenching around existing hardscape. We provide free on-site estimates with a detailed zone layout so you know exactly what you are getting. Call (856) 832-7958 for yours.

Most New Jersey municipalities require a plumbing permit and a backflow preventer inspection for irrigation system installations. Some towns also require a separate utility connection permit. The backflow preventer is a state requirement that prevents irrigation water from flowing back into the public water supply. We handle all permit applications and schedule the required inspections as part of our standard installation process, so you do not need to deal with the township yourself.

The number of zones depends on your property size, water pressure, flow rate, and how many different types of areas you have (open lawn, narrow strips, beds, slopes). A typical South Jersey residential property needs 4 to 8 zones. During our free site survey, we test your water pressure and flow rate to determine how many heads each zone can support, then design the layout for uniform coverage with no dry spots.

Sprinkler systems in South Jersey should be winterized by mid-November at the latest. The safest window is late October through the first week of November, before nighttime temperatures consistently drop below freezing. Water left in pipes, heads, and the backflow preventer can freeze, expand, and crack components, leading to expensive repairs in the spring. We offer winterization service for systems we installed as well as systems installed by other companies.
